Aquí Estamos 2015 was the Rio Grande Valley’s first free queer people of color conference. Dedicated to explore critical discussions on the lives and experiences of QPOC living along the border, free workshops were offered covering LGBTQ legal rights, transgender issues, immigration in the U.S. and Mexico, reproductive justice, health (sexual, physical, mental), media/writing, political advocacy, femininity/misogyny, and more.
Our keynote speaker was Carlos Padilla, national coordinator for the Queer Undocumented Immigrant Project, who spoke on his journey as a queer undocumented activist. He has been named one of the top 13 most influential LGBTQ Latinx activists in the world.
The conference took place in McAllen, Texas, on August 6 and 7, 2015 at the STC Cooper Center and drew national attention from groups such as GLAAD and the National Latina Institute of Reproductive Health. A documentary of the conference with exclusive interviews from QPOC in our region is scheduled to be released in 2016, directed by an RGV native filmmaker.
